During their talks in Hanoi on September 8, Minister ofAgriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat and Minister of FoodIndustry Maria Del Carmen Concepcion Gonzalez agreed to move thesigning of a cooperation agreement on veterinary medicine and animalquarantine forward.
In accordance with theagreements reached during the 30th and 31st meeting of theVietnam-Cuba Inter-Governmental Committee, Vietnam provided 42 billionVND (2 million USD) for the second project phase to develop cropvarieties in Cuba during the 2014-2017 period and 12 billion VND(571,429 USD) for a project supporting Cuba’s aquaculture during the2014-2016 period.
Both projects were launched in March this year.
In addition, the two sides also worked together to draft an agreement on coffee cooperation.
Minister Phat expressed his joy at the progress of the projects,asking the Cuban side to complete necessary procedures to sign abilateral cooperation deal in veterinary medicine and animal quarantineat an earlier date.
Concepcion highlyappreciated Vietnam’s support for Cuba’s rice productionprogramme and expressed her hope to broaden cooperation efforts to theprocessing.
Speaking highly of Vietnam’sexperience in aquaculture, she said Cuba hopes Vietnam would helpher country make a detailed action plan for a select province once amaster plan has been developed.
According to her, anew policy on aquaculture development was recently approved, so thatCuba is in need of farming technologies and a modern processing systemto improve the effectiveness and value of its aquaculture sector.
A joint rice production project in Cuba for the 2009-2015 periodhelped raise Cuba’s average rice output to 4.57 tonnes per hectarecompared to 3.45 tonnes in the past, she noted.
Theproject’s production model has been expanded to 27,758ha with a totalyield of 126,852 tonnes, she said, adding that this year the project isexpected to be implemented in 15 locations in 14 provinces in Cuba with atotal area of close to 30,000ha.-VNA
