A congress to set up the Vietnam Dairy Association (VDA) took place in Ho Chi Minh City on March 25.
Accordingly, the VDA, a social-occupational organisation, will include 67 official members and six collaborators, who are businesses, farmers, managers, scientists and technicians operating in all areas of milk production, processing and consumption.
The congress elected VDA’s executive and inspection boards for the 2010-2015 term, with Mai Kieu Lien, General Director of Vietnam Milk Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) as head.
The association will help its members cooperate, support, exchange experiences and improve professional knowledge in line with protecting their legal rights, said Lien, adding that it will provide suggestions and submit petitions to relevant state offices on standards and policies to promote milk production and business.
Apart from working as a consultation and promotion office to raise people’s awareness of milk and dairy products, it will establish cooperative relations with other associations as well as with international organisations, she said.
The number of mild cows nationwide in 2009 stood at 114,461, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent with dairy products reaching about 278,190 tonnes, a 6.1 percent rise over 2008.
Vietnam plans to develop industrial-scale dairy cow farms equipped with modern technology to increase the number of milk cows to nearly 146,100 in 2010, over 293,500 in 2015 and nearly 706,000 in 2025, respectively./.
