Vietnam hosts World Congress of Esperanto

Vietnam will host the 97th World Congress of Esperanto (UK 97) for the first time from July 28 to August 4, announced President of the Vietnam Esperanto Association (VEA) Nguyen Van Loi.

At a press briefing in Hanoi on July 27, Loi said the congress is expected to attract around 900 delegates from 61 countries and territories around the world, adding UK 97 will be an opportunity for Vietnam to contribute to the global Esperanto movement.

He thanked the global Esperanto association for its support to Vietnam ’s past struggle for national independence and freedom, as well as its current national development process.

Loi revealed that VEA has translated and published “Dang Thuy Tram Diary” about a young soldier’s memories during the war and “Truyen Kieu” (The Tale of Kieu) - one of the most significant works of Vietnamese literature written by famous poet Nguyen Du more than 200 years ago – into the Esperanto language.

The week-long event includes seminars and art performances to feature the theme “Esperanto – Bridge for Peace, Friendship and Development”. The Vietnam Day programme to introduce the nation’s land, people, customs, traditions and culture is also included in the event.

Meanwhile, the International Youth Congress of Esperanto (IJK 68) will also be held in Vietnam for the second time from August 5-11.-VNA
