Paris (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son, empowered by Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, attended a meeting among leaders on the Paris Pact for People and the Planet (4P) in Paris on September 25, at an invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, and Special Envoy of the 4P - former Senegalese President Macky Sall.
Also attending the event were heads of state and government from Brazil, Colombia, the UK, Norway, Portugal, Kenya, Mauritania, Barbados, and Tanzania, as well as leaders from various international organisations such as the United Nations, the African Union, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Participants emphasised that solidarity, multilateralism, and trust-building are essential foundations for addressing current global challenges. They reaffirmed the urgency of enhancing the role and voice of developing countries within the framework of global governance and international economic and financial institutions, while calling for the promotion of new solutions and approaches to address the debt burden shouldered by developing nations.
Some leaders affirmed their commitment to increasing funding while emphasising the need to enhance the effective use of loans, diversifying preferential financial resources for the poorest and most vulnerable countries, particularly in response to climate change.
Talking to President Macron, Son conveyed gratitude from the Vietnamese top leader To Lam for his invitation and his wish to meet with the President soon to discuss ways to boost bilateral cooperation, aiming for a new chapter in Vietnam-France relations to contribute to the development and mutual prosperity of both nations as well as the world.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese official also engaged in separate discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Kenyan President William Ruto, and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva regarding bilateral issues and cooperation directions under the 4P framework.
The 4P initiative was promoted by France and its President personally at the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in June 2023. To date, it has been supported by 60 nations, including Vietnam./.
