Vietnam looks for strengthened friendship with int’l peace organisations

- Vice Chairman  of the National Assembly and Chairman of the VietnamPeace Committee (VPC) Uong Chu Luu has stressed the needto enhance friendship and solidarity between the Vietnamese people and peace organisationsaround the world, especially those in America and Africa.

Speaking at a conference inHanoi on July 10 to review the committee’s work in the first half of 2018 andoutline tasks for the remaining months of the year, Luu highly valued the sense of responsibility and democracy, and honest opinionsof delegates at the event.

He expressed his support for and applauded the VPC’schapters in Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi for their efforts in organisingevents such as art performances, forums, workshops, and charitable activities inorder to promote peace as a significant value in Vietnam and other countries.

Dong Huy Cuong, Secretary General of the VPC, said the committee focused on fulfilling thefirst draft of the book “Vietnam: Aspiration for Peace” and joined a number ofinternational workshops on peace and security, which actively contributed toprotecting national interests and Vietnam’s image, and further promoted friendshipand solidarity with people in foreign countries.

VPC’s chapters in all localities have proactively participated infriendship peace activities of the committee and the Vietnam Union ofFriendship Organisations (VUFO), contributing to localities’ people-to-people diplomacy and fostering the friendship and solidarity betweenthe Vietnamese people and international friends.

Discussing tasks for the remaining months of 2018, participantsstressed the focus of completing the compilation and publication ofthe “Vietnam: Aspiration for Peace” book, and organising the Congress of the VPC for the 2018-2023tenure.

The committee will coordinate with its local chaptersto organise activities to mark the Day of Invalids and Martyrs (July 27) and the InternationalDay of Peace (September 21) and other activities.

Xuyen Viet Oil case: Appellate verdict announced, with six receiving reduced sentences

Specifically, the trial panel sentenced the mastermind of the case, Mai Thi Hong Hanh, ex-Director and Chairwoman of the Board of Members of Xuyen Viet Oil, to 11 years in prison for the crime of “giving bribes” and 17 years for “violating regulations on the management and use of State assets, causing loss and wastefulness.” The combined sentence is 28 years in prison, 2 years less than the first-instance verdict.

Khanh Hoa tightens control of fishing vessels at sea ports

As many as 99.7% of Khanh Hoa's fishing vessels over 15 metres in length – 631 out of 633 – have now been equipped with VMS devices.
