Vietnam has held talks with France on the prospects of the European country helping Vietnam to modernise its army and provide training for its army’s medical corps.

The issue was brought up during a discussion between the Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh and his French counterpart Herve Morin, in Paris on December 17 after the General had received a welcoming ceremony.

The ministers reviewed joint operations between both countries’ militaries in the past and agreed to turn their relationship into a strategic partnership.

They had decided to son carry out the accords on defence signed during French Prime Minister Francois Fillon’s recent visit to Vietnam .

A senior-level joint committee will be set up to work out joint military strategic programmes for the two countries, said ministers.

General Thanh told his French counterpart that he treasures the current defence ties with France .

He showed an interest in stepping up sharing their experiences, boosting cooperation programmes on defence, renewing Vietnam’s military hardware and conducting joint training programmes between the Vietnamese and French armies.

Minister Morin said that his country highly values Vietnam ’s prestige in Asia and wants to establish a long term partnership based on mutual trust.

When meeting the press after their talks, the French Minister said that he will visit Hanoi prior to the summer of 2010 to make as many agreements as possible on the development of this strategic dialogue.

During his three-day visit to France, which began on December 16, General Thanh met with the European Aeronautical Defence and Space Company (EADS).

The head of EADS, Louis Gallois, said that he hoped his company will expand its partnership with Vietnam beyond civil aviation to military technologies and aviation.

General Thanh talked with the EADS official about helping to train Vietnam’s pilots and the development of military technologies in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese minister and his delegation also visited the headquarters of the French air forces high command and the air force control centre during the visit./.
