A delegation from Ho Chi Minh City is paying a working visit to Mexico to exchange experiences in poverty reduction, particularly in urban areas.

The ten-day visit, which will end on August 12, forms part of a project titled “Supporting multi-dimensional poverty reduction in urban settings in HCM City,” funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

During their stay in Mexico, the Vietnamese delegation held working sessions with representatives and senior experts from Mexico’s National Council for the Evaluation of Social Policy (CONEVAL) and the Mexican Ministry of Social Development (SEDESOL).

At the meetings, in-depth discussions were held about the measurement of multi-dimensional poverty, the making of relevant and effective policies and programmes, and poverty reduction in social development, urban management and migration.

Talking with SEDESOL Deputy Minister Juan Carlos Lastiri Quiros, the HCM City officials were briefed on Mexico’s fight against poverty reduction initiated by the new government, led by President Enrique Pena Nieto, earlier this year.

According to Quiros, over 46 percent of Mexico’s population are classified as poor by the new methodology. He has described poverty reduction as one of the country’s leading priorities during the 2012-2018 period.

The multidimensional poverty methodology that Mexico is applying covers education, health care, social welfare, housing, basic services and food, in addition to the level of social cohesion, he said.

The delegation leader and Vice Chairman of the HCM City municipal People’s Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan informed his host about Vietnam’s achievements in poverty reduction. He outlined the country’s poverty policies and guidelines, including the National Target Programme on Sustainable Poverty Reduction.

Talking with the Vietnam News Agency, Thuan expressed his hope that the experience leant from Mexico during the visit can help HCM City improve the quality of poverty reduction.

The Vietnamese delegation also made fact-finding trips to several districts in Mexico City and Puebla state.-VNA
