Government officials of Vietnam and New Zealand met in the capital city of Wellington on February 25 to discuss ways of stepping up cooperation in a wide-range of areas.
The 3rd biennial meeting of the Vietnam-New Zealand Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation was co-chaired by the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Thanh Bien, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Tony Browne of the host country.
New Zealand pledged to continue its support for Vietnam at regional and international organisations and forums. It will increase technical assistance for Vietnam in the fields of agriculture, rural development, natural resources, the environment, science, technology, education and training.
The New Zealand officials also promised to promote bilateral cooperation in other areas such as finance and customs.
The two sides agreed to jointly organise a series of activities to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and New Zealand in 2010.
New Zealand plans to host a seminar in April to spotlight new business opportunities in ASEAN countries afforded by the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), as well as investment opportunities in Vietnam .
Meanwhile, Vietnam will organise a workshop in Ho Chi Minh City in the second quarter of this year to help domestic enterprises gain insight into the AANZFTA.
A large number of officials and entrepreneurs from both nations will attend the two events.
At the meeting, New Zealand officials spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements over the last year, including its economic growth rate of 5.32 percent, despite the global economic crisis. They also hailed opportunities to invest in education and training, forestry and building material production in Vietnam.
During the Vietnamese delegation’s trip to New Zealand, Trade Minister Tim Groser met with Deputy Minister Bien and Vietnamese Ambassador Vuong Hai Nam to seek measures to beef up bilateral economic and trade ties and strengthen coordination at multilateral forums.
Bien also held working sessions with leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) agency./.
