The 4th Vietnam Economic Forum has affirmed the correct and effective policy of the Party and State on pursuing Doi Moi (renewal), building an independent, self-reliant economy in combination with proactive and active international integration, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said at the forum on June 5.

HCM City, (VNA) – The 4th Vietnam Economic Forum has affirmedthe correct and effective policy of the Party and State on pursuing Doi Moi(renewal), building an independent, self-reliant economy in combination withproactive and active international integration, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinhsaid at the forum on June 5.

Theeffective implementation of this policy during more than 35 years of Doi Moihas contributed to producing historical achievements, the Government leader toldthe high-level session at the forum, adding that in the current situation, thebuilding of an independent, self-reliant economy in combination with proactiveand active international integration is an objective inevitability.

Hestressed that the 13th National Party Congress has set the goal ofVietnam becoming a developing country with modernity-oriented industry andincome above the lower middle level by 2025, a developing country with modernindustry and upper middle income by 2030, and a developed country with highincome by 2045.

However, Vietnam will not sacrifice social justice and security and the environmentfor economic growth, the PM said.

Therefore, Vietnam has defined that people is the centre, the subject, thetarget and the driving force of development.

On key tasks and solutions, PM Chinh said the first thing is tocreate a peaceful environment, maintain national independence, sovereignty andterritorial integrity, political stability, social order and safety, and stabilizethe legal environment, thus creating the foundation and favourable conditionsfor building an independent, self-reliant economy in combination with extensiveand in-depth international integration.

Anothertask is to continue fine-tuning institutions of the socialist-oriented marketeconomy that suit Vietnam’s conditions and international commitments.

PM Chinh stressed that the building of an independent, self-reliant economy incombination with extensive and in-depth international integration has anespecially important meaning for the country in the new period.

“Vietnam affirms our consistent policy of not choosing a closedeconomy, but instead staying steadfast to the direction of Doi Moi (renewal),building an independent, self-reliant economy in combination with proactive andactive international integration,” he said, reiterating that Vietnam wants tobe a good friend, a reliable partner and a responsible member of the internationalcommunity, ready to join hands with the international community to addressregional and global challenges for a peaceful, cooperative and prosperousworld.

The 4th Vietnam Economic Forum was co-organisedby the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission, the Government and Ho ChiMinh City on June 5.
Besides the high-level session, three otherthematic workshops were held the same day on the development of stable laboursupply chains after the pandemic, the capital and real estate markets, andtechnology modernization, digital transformation and diversification of supplychains.

In opening the high-level session, head of the Party CentralCommittee’s Economic Commission Tran Tuan Anh said the Vietnamese economy hasfaced unprecedented difficulties over the past two years due to the COVID-19pandemic. The economy grew at under 3 percent, the lowest rate for the past 30years, millions of labourers lost their jobs, thousands of enterprises had tostop operation, the capital and real estate markets saw abnormal fluctuationsand there is a risk of rising bad debts in the banking system.  

Hesaid the country has managed to control the pandemic, quickly restored productionand business activities, and supported people and businesses affected by thepandemic.  

However, the pandemic’s impact and the new developments in the international situation,particularly the Russia-Ukraine conflict, have required Vietnam to act morequickly and stronger to build an independent, self-reliant economy in combinationwith extensive and effective integration, he said.  

Delegates to the high-level session discussed and shared views on the contents of an independent andself-reliant economy of Vietnam in the new contexts and situation, focusing onthe global economy and major trends in international economic cooperation, opportunitiesand challenges of Vietnam in the global economy, human resource training fordigital technology to create breakthroughs in science-technology, and nationalrisk management in the new situation.

They also made policy recommendations on consolidating the Vietnamese economy’sinternal strength, enhancing its competitiveness and resilience against outsideshocks, and handling the relationship between building an independent,self-reliant economy and international integration./.

Vietnam targets 4.5 billion USD in cashew exports for 2025

Figures from the first six months show cashew exports reached 346,800 tonnes, earning 2.36 billion USD, a drop of 2.7% in volume but a surge of 20.4% in value annually. The rise was largely attributed to a significant increase in export prices, which helped offset lower shipment volumes.
