Tokyo (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Thanh has proposed Vietnam and Japan build an agreement on crime fight during his discussions with Japan’s police agencies as part of his visit to Japan from June 5 to 12.
Thanh and a delegation of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security had working sessions with the National Police Agency of Japan, the Ministry of Justice of Japan, the Osaka Prefectural Police and the Hyogo Prefectural Police.
At the sessions, Deputy Minister Thanh said the growth of Vietnam-Japan relations in various spheres provides a foundation for fruitful cooperation between his ministry and relevant agencies of Japan.
The two sides have been effectively sharing experience and cooperating in scientific and technical areas serving crime combat and prevention. They have been working together to prevent and fight transnational crime, drug crime, hi-tech crime and terrorism in their respective nations and in the region.
Thanh particularly noted that the establishment of a Vietnam-Japan security dialogue at the deputy ministerial level has helped intensify the two countries’ extensive strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia.
Pointing to the fact that the numbers of Vietnamese and Japanese citizens visiting and working in each other’s countries have increased over the past years, the deputy minister asked authorised agencies of Japan to increase information exchange and coordination in crime fight while assisting Vietnam’s interns and students to settle down and integrate into the local society.
The number of Vietnamese people living in Japan has approximated 200,000, up 36 percent from the same period of 2015, most of whom are trainees, interns and students.
Deputy Minister Thanh expressed his hope that the two sides will promote cooperation mechanisms on security, counter-terrorism and cyber security in an effective manner, helping ensure security for big events in the two countries, including the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Vietnam’s Da Nang this year and the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
He also urged the two sides to accelerate negotiations on agreements on mutual judicial assistance in criminal matters and the transfer of convicted persons.-VNA
