Representatives of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) met with international labour experts on August 4 to solicit their ideas for the draft law on labour unions and the revised labour law.

Chang Hee Lee, a senior expert of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), said some adjustments should be made to Vietnam ’s current laws in order to give more power to labour unions.

The modifications should also focus on the restructuring of unions at enterprises and the relationship between these organisations and employers. They should offer more detailed regulations on collective negotiations when conflicts arise between workers and employers, Lee added.

These suggestions are based on the results of a study jointly conducted by the VGCL and the ILO for Ho Chi Minh City and neighbouring provinces such as Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

At the end of the meeting, VGCL Vice President Mai Duc Chinh said he highly appreciates the ILO for its assistance in the survey and recommendations it made for the preparation of the draft law on labour unions and the revised labour law.

He confirmed that these laws, after being enforced for 19 years, need to be updated to be more responsive to the new situation as well as more compatible with international law in these areas./.
