Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam will turn off lights from 20:30 - 21:30 on March 30 to respond to Earth Hour this year.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has required corporations and units of the sector to coordinate with localities in organising campaigns to raise public awareness on energy saving and using energy in an efficient way.

Organisations and individuals from all areas including schools, businesses and residential households are encouraged to take part in these campaigns.

The capital city of Hanoi will respond to the 2019 Earth Hour with a series of activities which will begin on March 9 and culminate in an event from 20:00 to 21:30 on March 30 at the Cach Mang Thang Tam Square in the city’s downtown Hoan Kiem district.

The Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It has been described as the largest world grassroots movement for the environment, with the involvement of around 7,000 cities in 172 countries and territories so far.

In Vietnam, activities responding to the Earth Hour are coordinated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade with the support of the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN). The EVN has been the main sponsor of the Earth Hour movement in the country for 10 consecutive years, since Vietnam joined the campaign in 2009.-VNA
