Vietnam, UK prioritise fortes for cooperation

Hai held talks with the First Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Lord Peter Mandelson, met with Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Miliband, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Nick Clegg, President of the UK-Vietnam Parliamentarians’ Friendship Association Ben Chapman, and attended a banquet host by Prince Andrew.

At the meetings, the UK Royal Family, Government and politicians praised Vietnam ’s socio-economic development results, particularly in the fields of poverty reduction and international economic integration.

They expressed impressions over high growth rates Vietnam has recorded in the context of the global financial crisis and highlighted the expanded cooperation between the two countries, particularly in economy, trade, investment, education in the spirit of the 2008 joint statement between PM Nguyen Tan Dung and his UK counterpart Gordon Brown.

The two sides agreed upon courses of action and concrete measures to boost the multifaceted cooperation.

They agreed to intensify the exchange of delegations at all levels, particularly high-level. Prince Andrew said he would come to Vietnam on the occasion of the 1,000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi birthday in Oct. 2010 while Ministers Mandelson and Miliband also wished to visit Vietnam .

The two sides stressed the need to further cooperation at multilateral and international forums.

Deputy PM Hai said Vietnam supports the UK to speed up its relations with the ASEAN, particularly when the country will resume the ASEAN chair next year.

The UK affirmed its support to Vietnam in enhancing comprehensive cooperation with the EU, particularly in negotiating the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) between Vietnam and the EU, and requesting for stopping extension of anti-dumping taxes on Vietnam ’s leather-capped shoes exported to the EU market.

The two sides emphasised prioritised fields for cooperation such as energy, financial-banking, shipbuilding that are the UK has fortes in and Vietnam needs.

They agreed to give more incentives to their businesses to develop investment and business with the aim of reaching targets of 3 billion USD in two-way trade turnover and 3 billion USD in the UK ’s direct investment in Vietnam in the next few years.

They also agreed to develop a pilot project on Public-Private Partnership in traffic infrastructure construction.

The UK affirmed continued ODA priority for Vietnam , covering several new aspects such as climate change and scientific research.

The two sides appreciated the results in the cooperation in education-training, saying the field has untapped potentials. The UK side pledged to simplify visa granting procedures and give favourable conditions to Vietnamese students in the UK .

During his stay in the UK , Deputy PM Hai joined Prince Andrew to open the Vietnam Culture Day in London , and attended the Vietnam-UK Business Forums in London and Manchester , round-table seminars on financial-banking and investment.

He also received leaders from several leading economic groups of the UK , visited the Vietnamese Embassy and met with representatives of the overseas Vietnamese community and students in the UK./.
