HCM City (VNA) – Vietnam secured 14 gold medals on the first day of the Ho Chi Minh City International Track & Field – Vietnam Open 2018.
The 25th edition of the event began on July 26, bringing together 400 athletes from 40 provinces and cities nationwide and 120 foreign athletes from 11 countries and territories.
They are competing in 22 categories for men and 21 for women.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mai Ba Hung, Deputy Director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, said the event creates a chance for athletes to test themselves ahead of the upcoming Asian Games 2018 (ASIAD) in Indonesia.
In the 5,000m, male athlete Nguyen Van Lai and female runner Nguyen Thi Oanh, both from Vietnam, finished first with times of 14:44.71 and 16:20.26, respectively.
Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Bui Thi Thu Thao won the women’s long jump with a result of 6.55m, and her countryman Pham Van Lam won the men’s long jump with 7.74m.
In the 100m run, Kim Woo Sam of the Republic of Korea came first in the men’s category with 10.53 seconds, while Vietnam’s Le Thi Mong Tuyen won gold in the women’s category, clocking 11.84 seconds.
Vietnam’s runners Vu Thi Ly and Duong Van Thai bagged gold medals in the women’s and men’s 800m, in times of 2:10.81 and 1:50.62, respectively.
