Vietnamese boy shines at ITF Asia tennis championship

Vietnamese Pham Van Phuong won two titles during the second leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF)'s Asia 14 and Under Championships, Division II, which concluded in Ho Chi Minh City on January 30.

Phuong of Binh Duong defeated Vo Hoang Hung of HCM City 2-0 (7-6, 6-4) in the boys' singles category to win the title.

Duringthe boys' doubles final, Phuong and Pham Duc Phu defeated theirteammates Vo Hoang Hung and Thai Nguyen to emerge as the winners.

In the event's first leg, Phuong also seized the boys' singles and doubles titles.

Meanwhile,Pakistani player Mahin Aftab Qureshi overpowered Anika Seneviratne ofSri Lanka in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4 during the summit clash to winthe girl's singles title.

Mahin is the first femaleplayer in the under-14 girls' category to compete from Pakistan tennisand to have won the ITF Asian championship title. She was also arunner-up in the first leg of the championship.

Inthe girls' doubles, Rawat Ira Mehernissa and Mathema Anne of Nepalbested Seneviratne Anika and Perera Prabbudhi of Sri Lanka to take thelead.

With two boys' singles titles, two boys'doubles titles and two second-placed finishes, Vietnam accumulated 1,410points in total and have been promoted to play in Division I of thesame event next year.

Phuong and Hung were issuedwild cards to play in the ITF's Asian U14 Division I championships inBangkok, Thailand earlier this year.
The tournamentattracted a total of 65 players, including 28 girls, from 12 countries,such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, as well as Nepal,Cambodia and Bhutan.-VNA
