Jakarta (VNA) – Four Vietnamese citizens on board Papua New Guinea’s Air Niugini plane, that overshot the runway in Micronesia on September 28, have been confirmed as safe and sound.
On October 1, passengers Nguyen Van Tuan and Hoang Ngoc Linh left Papua New Guinea and return to Vietnam. Meanwhile, authorities are working to arrange flights for Luu Dinh Nga and Phan Van Lam so that they can come home as soon as possible.
The Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia had requested that Air Niugini provide sufficient healthcare, medicine, food, and accommodation for the Vietnamese nationals.
They also joined hands with the Department of Consular Affairs under the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry and relevant authorities in the host nation to complete necessary procedures to promptly bring the citizens home.
Air Niugini’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft P2-PXE landed short of the runway, instead hitting a lagoon on September 28 in Chuuk, Micronesia.
Early reports indicate that there was very poor visibility at the time due to bad weather, causing the aircraft to rest in the water 145m from the runway, Air Niugini, the national flag carrier of Papua New Guinea, said in a press statement.
Air Niugini had previously announced that one person was missing in the plane incident. However, more recently it updates that all 47 passengers and crew were now safe. –VNA
