Singapore (VNA) – About 1,000 Vietnamese expatriates and students in Singaporeattended a gathering on January 14 to celebrate the approaching Lunar New Year.
Togetherthey listened to musical performances and enjoyed Vietnamese dishes traditionallymade for the lunar New Year Festival (Tet).
VietnameseAmbassador to Singapore Nguyen Tien Minh hailed the Vietnamese community inSingapore for their friendship and cultural activities in 2016. He particularlyhighlighted the community’s campaign to raise donations to build outdoorexercise facilities for soldiers in Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago.
Vietnam andSingapore recorded annual trade revenue of 20 billion SGD (14.3 billion USD).Singapore was ranked third among 114 countries and territories investing inVietnam, with 1,772 valid projects worth approximately 38 billion USD.
The sameday, Ambassador to Algeria and Senegal Pham Quoc Tru visited several Vietnamesefamilies living in Senegal’s capital city Dakar and presented them with NewYear gifts.
He alsoattended a get-together with 40 representatives of the Vietnamese community inthe city.
Theambassador extended his Tet greetings to the expatriates, stressing thatoverseas Vietnamese are an indispensable part of Vietnam and the Governmentalways creates the best conditions for them to do business and socialactivities back home.
Senegal ishome to several thousands of Senegalese of Vietnamese origin, most of them areof the second, third and fourth generations and unable to speak the mothertongue. Only a few of the first-generation Vietnamese in Senegal are alive andthey are now in their nineties. -VNA
