Vietnamese grandmaster finishes second at Danzhou chess event

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem finished second at the Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament, which concluded in China on July 18.

In the last match, Liem, who has Elo rating of 2.726, tied with Wei Yi of China, Elo 2.738, after 18 moves.

After nine matches, the former world blitz chess champion Liem had 5.5 points to become the runner-up of the event with the award of 11,000 USD.

Chinese Yi took the event’s title with 6.5 points to walk away with the prize of 20,000 USD.

With this result, Liem will gain 10 more Elo points to reach an Elo rating of 2.736 and ranks 27th in the world.

After this tournament, Liem will compete in the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz tournament on August 14-19 in the US.

The event will attract the participation of top chess players, including Ivan Nepomniachtchi of the Russia (Elo rating of 2.819), Hikaru Nakamura of the US (2.796), Lenier Dominguez of Cuba (2.803), Viswanathan Anand of India (2.789), Levon Aronian of Armenia (2.797) and Sergey Karjakin of Russia (2.765).

Liem is one of four wildcards. The three others are GMs Leinier Dominguez of Cuba (2.796), David Navara of the Czech Republic (2.737) and Garry Kasparov of Russia, 54-year-old former world champion.-VNA
