The Vietnamese Embassy in Italy on January held a get-together for overseas Vietnamese people living in Rome to welcome the Lunar New Year (Tet).

Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Long reviewed the breakthroughs achieved in bilateral relations between the two countries in 2013.

He also praised contributions made by the Vietnamese community in the country to Vietnam’s development as well as their great influence in promoting the friendship between Vietnam and Italy.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Italy last year was a prominent event, contributing to elevating the ties between the two sides to a higher level. The Italian Government now firmly considers Vietnam as a strategic partner, he said.

Meanwhile, he stated that bilateral economic and trade cooperation also saw great development, with two-way trade reaching almost 3 billion USD.

The Embassy organised more than 100 events in the fields of culture, trade and investment in 22 cities across Italy in 2013 to celebrate the 40 th anniversary of Vietnam-Italy diplomatic ties.

At present, about 5,000 Vietnamese people are settled in Italy. They work closely with Vietnam’s representative agencies to foster the ties between the two countries.-VNA
