Vietnam strongly denounces the coup targeting the democratically and legitimately elected President Zelaya of Honduras, said Ambassador Bui The Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Security Council.

Ambassador Giang made the remarks at a meeting of the 15-nation council on September 25 regarding recent intimidation acts against Brazilian embassy in Honduras , where ousted President Jose Manuel Zelaya has taken refuge with family members since his return to the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa on September 21.

“We are concerned about the rising tension in Honduras , in particular the violence outbreak in parts of the country and the threat to use force against diplomatic premises and officials, specifically the Brazilian Embassy in this case,” the ambassador said.

He underlined that any breach of the international law, including particularly any breach of the inviolability and immunity of diplomatic representations, must be condemned.

Vietnam demands an immediate return of constitutional and democratic order to the country and urges the de facto authorities of Honduras to take necessary measures to ensure safety and normal operations of diplomatic representations in Tegucigalpa , the ambassador said.

“We call upon all parties concerned to resume the dialogue process and mediation efforts for a peaceful and legitimate solution to the current crisis,” he said, adding that Vietnam supports regional mechanisms and intiatives such as OAS and Rio in helping settle the crisis in an appropriate manner, in the interests of the Honduran people and peace and stability in the region./.
