Phnom Penh (VNA) – With Vietnam celebrating the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954-2024), for the past few days, Cambodian press and media agencies have published many articles and images about the event, praising the Dien Bien Phu Victory as a model of solidarity in the struggle for liberation of colonial peoples around the world.

The articles highlighted the value and significance of this historic victory to Vietnamese and peace-loving people around the world.

On May 8, in its article published in both Khmer and English versions, Cambodia's Khmer Times quoted Uch Leang, a researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC), as saying that Dien Bien Phu Victory stands as a quintessential example of solidarity among Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, leading to a collective triumph in the struggle against French colonialism and later American imperialism.

He asserted that the resistance to Vietnam’s independence from French rule led by the Viet Minh under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh is considered the first in the post-World War II liberation movement.

The Cambodian scholar praised the role of the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia alliance in the resistance and the 1954 historic Dien Bien Phu Victory. The three nations shared a common perception of their collective destiny, which became a powerful force that fostered solidarity between their armies and peoples.

Furthermore, he noted that the countries’ governments and peoples continue to uphold that spirit to this day, working together to nurture common goals and stances on the international stage and within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This has helped maintain ASEAN centrality and promote peace and trilateral cooperation in shared economic zones along their borders.

Leang, who once studied in Vietnam from 1995 to 2001, expressed admiration for the country’s economic progress, especially since 1986. The expert also highlighted Vietnam’s abundant and high-skilled human resources, ability to attract large foreign investors, and great potential in production and export activities.

He said Vietnam will undoubtedly achieve its vision of becoming a high-income developed country by 2045, and further flourish thanks to its development collaboration with other countries in the region.

On this occasion, the Agence Kampuchea Press (AKP) - the national news agency of Cambodia - also ran articles praising Vietnam’s Dien Bien Phu Victory.

In an article publicised on May 7, AKP quoted Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's speech at the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory held on the same day in the northwestern province of Dien Bien.

Chinh emphasised that the victory affirms the wise and ingenious leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam led by President Ho Chi Minh, while demonstrating the progress and development of the Vietnam People's Army and the strength of solidarity among the Vietnamese people."

Covering the grand ceremony, AKP said that it is an important event for Vietnam, attracting the attention of people of all classes, including workers, officials, civil servants, Party members, armed forces, veterans, and youth volunteers.

The news agency also stressed that nearly 300 delegates including heads of state, representatives of heads of state, and international missions, and foreign reporters participated in the event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory. Among these, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Neth Savoeun, a senior representative of Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, led a high-ranking delegation of Cambodia to the event./.
