VN hails diplomatic corps’, int’l organisations’ help

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem met withambassadors and representatives of international organisations inHanoi on Jan. 27.

The meeting was jointly held bythe Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Sports andTourism and the Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee.

Addressing the meeting, Khiem thanked the ambassadors, heads ofdiplomatic agencies and staff of international organisations who haveactively supported Vietnam during its development cause, andexpressed his hope to bolster friendship with the internationalcommunity.

Khiem spoke highly of the country’sachievements, which have been assisted by solid support from worldwidegovernments and organisations in various fields including politics,economy, culture and education.

He also said theassistance has contributed to the success of the country’s major festiveevent, the 1000 th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi , as well to theUNESCO recognition of Vietnam ’s outstanding cultural heritages.

Khiem affirmed Vietnam ’s continual efforts in establishingcomprehensive foreign policies to step up international integration andbilateral and multifaceted cooperation, as well as contributing toregional and world peace, stability and development.

At the meeting, Morocco Ambassador El Housine Fardani hailedVietnam for being one of the economies with the highest growth rate in2010, despite global financial crisis. He also congratulated Vietnamon its accomplishment of the ASEAN Chairmanship as well as itssuccessful 11 th National Party Congress.

The sameday, Ho Chi Minh City ’s authorities hosted a reception for consulsgeneral, honourable consuls and leaders of foreign representativeagencies, trade associations, international organisations andnon-governmental organisations on the occasion of the Lunar New YearFestival.

The Consul General of Germany – head ofthe diplomatic corps in the city and the consuls general of Canada ,the UK , Kuwait and Indonesia took the floor, praising the city’sachievements in 2010 despite facing a variety of challenges.

The diplomats pointed out the city’s weaknesses and shortcomings,especially its inner city traffic systems, crime, fraud and occasionalbad behaviour of taxi drivers to foreigners.

Theyalso showed their interest in HCM City ’s human resourcesdevelopment programmes, education, job placement and public-privatepartnerships.

Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’sCommittee Nguyen Thanh Tai said in 2011, the city will focus efforts ondealing with six major issues – traffic congestion, floods,environmental pollution, high-quality human resources development,building a modern administration apparatus and speeding up economicrestructuring.

HCM City will strive topost a GDP growth rate of 11.5 percent, reach total social investment ofover 200 trillion VND and create stable jobs for more than 120,000workers, Tai added.

On behalf the city’s leaders,Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Hoang Quan extendedseason’s greetings to leaders and staff of foreign representativeagencies.

The mayor thanked the diplomatic corps andinternational organisations for their support and expressed his hopethat the city would receive more assistance and cooperation./.

Vietnam proposes key priorities for advancing gender equality

Sharing Vietnam’s achievements, Thanh noted that women account for nearly one-third of Vietnam’s National Assembly members; 40% of Vietnam’s STEM workforce is female; 26.5% of businesses in the country are owned by women; women account for 68.5% of the country’s labour force, surpassing the global average of 48.7% and 14.4% of Vietnam’s peacekeepers are women, higher than the UN average of 10.2%.
