Vietnam and Indonesia have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation soon.

The agreement was reached at talks between visiting Deputy Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh and his Indonesian counterpart Sjafie Siamsoeddin in Jakarta , Indonesia , on Sept. 15.

At the talks, Lt. Gen. Vinh informed the host of Vietnam ’s preparations for the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) that is slated for mid-October in Hanoi , and other countries’ feedback.

The two sides discussed issues of mutual concern to bring into play ASEAN achievements in enhancing defence cooperation with its dialogue partners to ensure regional stability, peace and development.

Deputy Minister Vinh spoke highly of Indonesia ’s active and responsible role in the bloc’s development and in building the ASEAN Community.

Vietnam thanked Indonesia for its active support and contribution to conferences hosted by Vietnam , he said.

The deputy minister also congratulated Indonesia on its presidency of ASEAN and Indonesia ’s Defence Ministry on its presidency of ADMM+ in 2011, confirming that Vietnam would support and assist Indonesia in organising related conferences.

As current Chair of ADMM and ADMM+, Vietnam wants Indonesia to take initiative in organising conferences of ASEAN senior defence officials and related events to promote humanitarian relief as well as cooperation in sea security, army medicine, anti-terrorism and peace maintenance, said Vinh.

Also on Sept. 15, Deputy Defence Minister Vinh and his entourage paid a courtesy visit to Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro./.
