Hanoi (VNA) - Volcano Sinabung in Karo district, Indonesia's North Sumatra province erupted on early October 12, spewing an ash column of up to 2 km to the sky.

The eruption took place at 02:45 am (local time), said head of the Information, Data and Public Relations Centre of National Agency for Disaster Management of Indonesia Sutopo Nugroho. The eruption left no casualty but forced people to evacuate.

Earlier, the volcano also erupted on October 11, spreading ash by up to 1.5 km high.

Mount Sinabung has been on top alert since July 2, 2015 with no-go zones of seven km in the south, southeast and east of the crater, according to Sutopo Nugroho.

Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire where several tectonic plates meet and cause 90 percent of the world’s seismic activity. The country is currently home to nearly 130 active volcanoes.-VNA
