The ninth National Vovinam Championships in Algeria closed on January 28 in the Algiers capital in the presence of Vietnamese Ambassador Do Trong Cuong and Algerian sport officials.

This year’s event drew 580 athletes from 80 clubs of 22 provinces of the North African country.

The first club of Vovinam was established in 2001 in the capital’s Hydra district. At present, about 7,000 people in the age package of 14-52 are practising this sport.

Zarouki Mohamed, a 25-year-old athlete from Dar El Beida, who won men’s singles champion this year said Vovinam helped him to better understand Vietnamese sporting spirit and courage.

Last year, at the World Vovinam Championship held Germany , the Algerian team of Angieri secured 22 medals including 8 golds, 7 silvers and 7 bronze medals.

On this occasion, the Algeria Martial Arts League presented insignia to Ambassador Do Trong Cuong for his contributions to promoting Vovinam sport in Algeria. /.
