Walk campaign to raise funds for the needy surpasses target

The “Million steps of kindness” walk campaign held by the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC) and the Vietnam Youth Federation to call on the community to engage in physical activities to raise donations to the needy, has surpassed its goal, even 12 days earlier than the schedule.

Hanoi (VNA) –  The “Million steps of kindness” walk campaignheld by the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRC) and the Vietnam Youth Federation tocall on the community to engage in physical activities to raise donations tothe needy, has surpassed its goal, even 13 days earlier than the schedule.

The campaign, held in celebration of the 70thanniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 7, 1954- 2024) and theHanoi’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954-2024), it was scheduled to last for 56days, from February 25 to April 22 as it represented 56-day historic campaignof the Dien Bien Phu Victory that “resoundedacross the five continents and shook the globe”.

Initially, the campaign aimed to attract 70,000 peopleto walk and jog for a total distance of 700,000km and record their results viathe app of V-Race.

So far, 78,500 people have joined walking and jogging for 1,698,000km, raising  more than 7 billion VND (284,000 USD) to build seven kitchens forsemi-boarding students in mountainous areas, provided sustainable livelihoods to 70 low-income families, essential goods for 700 disadvantagedhouseholds, nutrition advice and assistance to 7,000 children frompoor families, and free health examination and treatment to 7,000people in disadvantaged circumstances in the northern mountainous provinces ofDien Bien, Son La, and Thai Nguyen.

VRC President Bui Thi Hoa said the “Million steps ofkindness” campaign marks the start of a humanitarian journey nationwideappealing to people of all ages and from all social strata to engage in gooddeeds for the sake of the community.

She added that the participation by each person is notonly a physical act for their health but also a demonstration of thecontinuation of the traditional kindness and heroism passed down from formergenerations.

She also asked individuals and organisations to continue support for the programme until April 22./.

Tien Giang steps up efforts to eliminate substandard houses

According to the Tien Giang People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed.

Bac Giang to eliminate substandard houses by November

Local authorities have identified 795 homes of poor and near-poor households and individuals with recognised service to the nation that qualify for support. Of these, 475 require complete reconstruction and 320 need significant repairs, with estimated costs totaling 39 billion VND (1.53 million USD).
