The first flower growing alliance in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong has been launched with the financial support from the World Bank (WB) as part of its project on improving the competitiveness of Vietnam ’s agriculture.

An agreement to this effect was signed on June 19 in Lam Dong at the witness of Victoria Kwakwa, WB Country Director in Vietnam , and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The alliance was founded between the Da Lat Flower – Forest Bio-technology Corporation and 41 local flower farming households.

The total capital investment for the alliance is over 5.4 trillion VND (roughly 286.2 million USD), of which 1.76 trillion VND will be allocated to households joining the alliance, with 2,000 USD each, to build glasshouses and install modern watering systems.

The corporation will receive 20,000 USD to transfer technologies for planting Jimpa daisies to the farmers and helping promote their products.

During the 18-month project, the farmers will be assisted to grow flowers in accordance with the Vietnamese Good Agriculture Practices (VietGap) standards and their products will be purchased by the company for export.

The alliance’s success is expected to set an important precedent to expand this model across the province.

Pham Van An, Head of the Lam Dong Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the WB’s assistance will help the farmers access modern techniques and improve their production capacity, thereby boosting the flower export turnover and revenues of the province and improving incomes of the local residents./.
