The second phase of a World Bank-funded project to upgrade the Mekong Delta’s urban areas was launched, benefiting the six regional cities Can Tho, My Tho, Cao Lanh, Ca Mau, Tra Vinh and Rach Gia during the 2014-2017 period.

The 7-year project comprises a total investment of 399 million USD, with 293 million USD in official development assistance from the WB, and the rest provided by the Vietnamese Government.

It is part of the National Urban Upgrade Programme for the 2009-2020 period, which covers 100 urban areas throughout Vietnam.

The project aims to provide resettlement areas for the selected cities and improve infrastructure, including sewage systems, roads, water supply, and waste treatment systems.

Expected to be completed in 2017, the project will benefit 2 million people, both directly and indirectly.

During its first phase, which ended in August this year, the project constructed approximately 44km of roads, 60km of sewage pipes and 11km of canals. Foundations were laid for 1,000 houses, and more than 50,000 households were supplied with water.

In Can Tho city alone, 76 out of 86 the project’s contracts have been completed, with 35 low-income residential areas upgraded and 16.5ha of resettlement area built.-VNA
