The criminal situation along Vietnam ’s coastline and within its territorial waters as well as measures to deal with it were high on agenda of a scientific workshop in Hanoi on June 22.

More than 50 reports by researchers and officers from the Ministry of Public Security, the Navy Force, the Marine Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were delivered at the workshop.

The participants said Vietnam with 3,200 km-long coastline, being one of the ten countries holding the longest coastline in the world, has recently seen complicated developments of marine crimes, including drug and weapon transportation and smuggling as well as piracy involving foreign elements.

Marine crimes in Vietnam have taken various forms and had a close link with criminal gangs inside and outside the country, they added.

The participants also emphasised the need to strengthen coordination among law enforcement bodies and improve personnel training.

The workshop provided a practical foundation for the Ministries of Public Security, Defence and Foreign Affairs to complete a system of relevant legal documents and measures to prevent and fight violations and crimes at sea./.
