Young people and students in Hanoi displayed their love to and responsibility for defending the country’s seas and islands through a festival entitled ‘young people and the homeland’s sea and islands’ on October 21.
The festival, co-organised by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union’s Central Committee (HCYUCC) and the Academy for Diplomacy, encouraged the capital city’s young people and students to take practical activities that benefit soldiers and communities who live in border areas or on islands.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Tran Thanh Lam, the head of the HCYUCC’s Commission for Popularisation and Education, said that over the past four years, the ‘young people and the homeland’s seas and islands’ event has brought more than 400 students, young artists, reporters, entrepreneurs and doctors to the island district of Truong Sa and the observation platform DK1.
From these trips, many significant programmes have been carried out including gathering stones to build up Truong Sa, going offshore with the young fishermen, lighting up the defence platforms and bringing fresh water to Truong Sa, he said.
Especially, the ‘gathering stones to build up Truong Sa’ programme has so far received over 42 billion VND from cooperatives and individuals nationwide, he added.
A wide range of activities took place during the festival, including an exhibition showcasing 80 photos, together with articles, diaries, poems and songs written by those who have joined the programme and a contest where students write letters to soldiers based on the island.
The highlights of the event were the screening of two films depicting the feelings of residents from the mainland when they landed on Truong Sa and an arts programme that reflected the capitals students and young people’s gratitude to the soldiers who guard the Truong Sa Archipelago and the DK platforms.-VNA
