- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued an official dispatch, requesting ministries, sectors, and localities to continue vigorously and effectively implementing fire prevention and control measures nationwide.

Accordingly, Chairpersons of People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities were asked to direct the People's Committees at all levels and relevant agencies to strictly fulfill their responsibilities for forest fire prevention and control management; and enhance inspection and supervision activities for forest fire prevention and control early, from afar, and from the grassroots level, considering this as a key and continuous task. Read full story

- Nearly 70 Vietnamese expatriates from 22 countries recently returned to their homeland and visited the Truong Sa (Spratly) and DKI platform, as part of a trip co-organised by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs and the High Command of the Vietnam People's Navy.

From April 24 to 30, they went to the islands of Sinh Ton Dong, Len Dao, Da Dong, and Da Tay, the Truong Sa township, and the DKI/14 Phuc Tan platform, where they met residents, officers and soldiers; attended musical exchanges; and visited local schools, pagodas, and households. Read full story

- The freshly ended five-day holidays saw 347 traffic accidents nationwide, causing 138 deaths and 285 injuries.

The figures were down 9.16%, 32.35%, and 1.38% compared to the similar holidays last year, respectively. Read full story

- As many as 51,600 new enterprises with total registered capital of nearly 508 trillion VND (20 billion USD) were established in the first four months of 2024, representing year-on-year increases of 3.4% in the number of businesses and 9.3% in the capital, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

These new businesses registered a total of 353,800 workers, a rise of 6.8% over the same period last year. Read full story

- The 4th edition of VinFuture Prize, an annual international award that honours remarkable scientific breakthroughs and promotes innovations for humankind, has officially closed its nomination portal with a record of 1,469 submissions.

The nominations cover a diverse range of critical fields, including health care (36.3%), sustainable energy (24.6%), environment and climate change (15.2%), artificial intelligence (AI) applications across multiple industries (13.8%), and agriculture (10.1%). Read full story

- Vietnam’s agro-forestry-aquatic product exports raked in some 19.06 billion USD in the first four months of 2024, up 23.7% year-on-year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) reported.

Meanwhile, the country imported 14.32 billion USD worth of these products, resulting in a trade surplus of 4.74 billion USD, a rise of 71.5% year on year. Read full story

- The elevation of the stock market to "emerging" status can help Vietnam attract an additional 10 billion USD in both direct and indirect investment, KB Vietnam Securities JSC (KBSV) reported, citing the World Bank (WB).

KBSV experts said if Vietnam is classified by FTSE Russell as a secondary emerging market, it may gain 0.7-1% in the FTSE Emerging Index, thus helping the Vietnamese stock market lure between 800 million USD and 1 billion USD in new investments from exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Read full story

- The tourism sector served about 8 million tourists during the five-days holiday from April 27 to May 1, up 14.2% year on year, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has reported.

Of the tourists, 3.6 million stayed overnight and the average room occupancy at accommodation establishments nationalwide was up to 70%, or even 100%y in some coastal destinations. Read full story

- Vietnam’s tourism sector served over 6.2 million foreign visitors and 40.5 million domestic tourists in the first four months of this year, earning 271.4 trillion VND (nearly 10.7 billion USD) in revenue, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT).

The number of international visitors increased by 68.3% over the same period in 2023, statistics showed.Read full story

- The 2024 Shanghai International Film Festival organising board recently announced that Vietnamese-French director and scriptwriter Tran Anh Hung will serve as the jury president of the festival's Golden Goblet Awards.
