Cambodia, Russia enhance bilateral cooperation

Phnom Penh (VNA) - Cambodia and Russia agreed to enhance their bilateral cooperation during the 9th session of the Cambodian-Russian intergovernmental commission.

The session was co-chaired by Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and visiting Russian Minister of Telecoms and Mass Communication Nikolay Nikiforov in Phnom Penh on March 28-29.

At the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of bilateral cooperation in security and law enforcement in military-technology, trade and investment, tourism, agriculture, information technology, civil aviation, science education, culture, health and energy.

Both sides welcomed the outcomes of the meeting of the Cambodian-Russian High-Level Working Group on the Promotion of Joint Investment Projects, which is aimed at boosting trade, economic and investment cooperation up to 2020.

They also welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Russian firm Enex and the Cambodian Ministry of Mines and Energy, for a feasibility study on the development of the Stung Battembang 2 hydropower project.

Cambodia requested that Russia continues providing training for Russian-speaking tourist guides and to strengthen commercial exchange in agricultural products. Cambodia also asked Russia to provide medical equipment and medicines to Cambodia as well as provide training courses to Cambodian medical staff.

The Russian side looked forward to welcoming a working visit of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to Moscow in May.

Russia also extended an invitation to Cambodia to participate in the 20th International Economic Forum to be held in Saint Petersburg on October 26-28 and the 2nd Eastern Economic Forum to be held in Vladivostok on September 2-3.

In November last year, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev paid his first visit to Cambodia and witnessed a signing ceremony of 10 bilateral agreements.-VNA
