Phnom Penh (VNA) – The opposition leader of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Sam Rainsy on November 8 was fined in absentia for defaming Som Soeun, a minister attached to Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen. 

Sam Rainsy was sued for defaming PM Hun Sen and Som Soeun, who is also website administrator of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), on his personal facebook page on March 10. 

The Cambodian First Instance Court ordered him to pay a total of 6,250 USD in fines and compensation for the plaintiff. 

Ram Rainsy has been living exile since November 2015 to avoid a two-year sentence in jail for defamation of Deputy PM Hor Namhong in 2008. He was also fined 2,500 USD by the Phnom Penh Court for defaming National Assembly President Samdech Heng Samrin. 

He did not show up in court on October 21 as summoned by the Cambodian Prosecution in a lawsuit case regarding to security disturbance on September 11.-VNA
