Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Military Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo on June 13 revealed that the self-styled Islamic State (IS) is present in almost every province in the country.

Speaking with reporters in the capital city of Jakarta, Nurmantyo affirmed that IS operates in Indonesia as clandestine "sleeper cells”, but he warned that they could launch attacks at any time.

The general also said that militant groups affiliated with IS are also active in the country.

There is also a possibility that IS-linked militants fighting in Marawi city in the southern Philippines will come to Indonesia and unite with their terrorist fellows here, he said.

The same day, an Indonesian police spokesman confirmed that police seized a shipment of 500 explosive detonators. The operation took place at the main airport of South Sulawesi province.

According to investigation, the consignment was bound for Borneo Island.

The police will investigate to find out the purpose of the shipment of detonators, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred with Indonesian security authorities on alert for attacks from militants, particularly those linked with IS.

Indonesia first witnessed an IS attack last year in Jakarta, killing four people.-VNA
