More than 5,000 people will join a walk to raise funds for academically outstanding poor children in four countries in the Mekong basin, the organising board said at a preparation meeting on Nov. 20.

The walk is part of the Mekong-Japan Tourism-Culture Days scheduled for Dec. 1-5 in the Mekong delta city of Can Tho.

Together with the participation of hundreds of students and representatives from armed forces, agencies and organisations in Can Tho city, the walk will draw government officials and delegates from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan, according to the organising board.

The organising board said it expected the event to serve as a call to action, encouraging all walks of life to join hands for the future of outstanding children living in poverty.

To the same end, a charity show will be held, at which the organising board will auction off items, such as a picture of Hanoi’s ancient streets, a mobile phone SIM card and objects donated by well-known artists.

Money from the two events will be presented to deserving children in four countries in the Mekong basin – Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam./.
