9th VFF National Congress convenes first working session

Hanoi (VNA) – The firstworking session of the 9th National Congress of the VietnamFatherland Front (VFF) was held in Hanoi on September 18 to look into a workreviewing report and preparations for the opening ceremony of the congress onSeptember 19 morning.

Truong Thi Mai, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee andhead of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Mass Mobilisation; TranThanh Man, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the VFFCentral Committee, and 1,300 delegates attended the event.

The delegates heard the report reviewing the operations of the VFF CentralCommittee, the Presidium and the Standing Board of the VFF Central Committee forthe 2014-2019 term.

Hau A Lenh, Vice President and Secretary General of the VFF Central Committee,said over the past five years, the VFF Central Committee, the Presidium and theStanding Board have renewed their management and implementation of solutions,and worked hard to perform their role and responsibility for great nationalunity bloc building.

They have paid more attention to connecting the Party and State with people,and optimising resources to effectively fulfill front tasks, he said.

During the eighth tenure, the VFF Central Committee convened ten meetings to discussand decide major matters, issued programmes and resolutions on theimplementation of key tasks and solutions, and encouraged people from all walksof life to join hands in realising the targets of socio-economic development,and ensuring national defence and security, and foreign affairs, the officialstressed.

Meanwhile, the Presidium has played an active role in law building and presentedopinions of voters and people at the National Assembly’s sessions, Lenh said.

He also highlighted efforts of the Standing Board of the VFF Central Committeein new-style rural area and civilized urban building, as well as the attentionthe board has paid to remote, border and island areas, and victims of naturaldisasters.

Their activities have contributed to promoting the great national unity blocand encouraging people of all social strata to engage in implementing majortasks, he said.

The report also pointed out limitations in the operations of the VFF CentralCommittee, the Presidium and the Standing Board regarding their response tosome pressing and newly-emerging issues, law building, social supervision and feedback.

On this occasion, the Presidium of the eighth VFF Central Committee launched aSMS campaign to collect funds in support of the poor./.

Vietnam proposes key priorities for advancing gender equality

Sharing Vietnam’s achievements, Thanh noted that women account for nearly one-third of Vietnam’s National Assembly members; 40% of Vietnam’s STEM workforce is female; 26.5% of businesses in the country are owned by women; women account for 68.5% of the country’s labour force, surpassing the global average of 48.7% and 14.4% of Vietnam’s peacekeepers are women, higher than the UN average of 10.2%.
