Hanoi (VNA) – About 7,200 members of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and volunteers will be serving the upcoming United Nations Day of Vesak 2019.
According to the National Volunteer Centre under the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the youngsters are proficient in foreign languages and have fundamental knowledge of Buddhism.
According to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, 1,650 delegates from 112 countries and territories worldwide have registered to attend the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak scheduled for May 12-14 in the northern province of Ha Nam.
The UN General Assembly on December 15, 1999 recognised the Day of Vesak to celebrate the thrice-sacred event of the life of the Buddha Gautama and to acknowledge the contributions Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world, has made to humanity.
The UN Day of Vesak was first celebrated in 2001.-VNA
