Inspectors from ADB say a project funded by the bank on teachers for upper secondary and technical schools should be extended for another 12 months to fully reach its targets.
After a two-week inspection over the implementation of the project in Hanoi and several provinces, Eiko Izawa, leader of the ADB’s inspection delegation said the 34 million USD project had recorded remarkable achievements in all designed items halfway through its term, from July 2007-May 2010 due to the close cooperation between experts of Vietnam and Japan.
A report by Vu Quoc Chung, the project’s director, said 55.6 percent of works have been completed, with 42 percent of investment disbursed. The report also underlined that this is one of the projects using ADB’s loans showing best financial results.
Among the most obvious results of the project is a set of standards for teachers and rector of senior high schools. The document is seen as a legal framework for the management and development of school staff nationwide.
Also, 21 training facilities with modern and comprehensive equipment have been built under the project at 17 teachers’ training colleges across the country to improve their capacity.
The project also presented 3,522 scholarships worth 1.75 million USD to ethnic students at pedagogical schools. It plans to continue to hand over another 1,478 scholarships this year./.
