Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary and State President To Lam on August 28 asked the Central Military Commission (CMC), and the Ministry of Defence to continue enhancing the military’s quality and combat strength toward the goal of building an elite, streamlined and strong army in 2025, paving the way to become a revolutionary, disciplined, and modern one by 2030.

At a working session with the Standing Board of the CMC, the top leader affirmed the important role of the military in maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for national development, highlighting that it is a must for the armed forces to uphold combat readiness to safeguard the airspace, seas, and border and inland areas, join hands with other forces to sustain security order across the nation, and proactively respond to non-traditional security challenges. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has signed a decision on assigning the duties to Deputy Prime Ministers.

Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh is assigned to supervise and direct areas related to investment planning; forecasting and macroeconomic management policies; development of types of enterprises; collective economy and cooperatives; preventing crime, smuggling and trade fraud; anti-corruption work; inspection and settlement of complaints and denunciations; ethnic and religious affairs; regular issues on emulation - rewards, administrative reform, digital transformation; amnesty; judicial reform; and coordination between the Government and the Supreme People's Court and the Supreme People's Procuracy. He will direct the implementation of the work of the Government when the Prime Minister is absent and when authorised by the PM, and approve the investment policy on the projects in the fields he is assigned. - The Party and State always pay great attention and pin trust in intellectuals, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man stated on August 28, affirming that promoting the comprehensive strength and sustainable development of this contingent is a responsibility of the whole Party, State, the political system and the society.

- A delegation of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), led by Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo member and Secretary of the Party Central Committee, paid a working visit to Brazil from August 26 to 27, aiming at fostering and expanding relations with political parties in the South American country as well as promoting the comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

During the visit, Nghia, who is also the head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education, held talks and meetings with President of the Communist Party of Brazil Luisiana Santos, President of Brazil’s Workers Party Gleisi Hoffmann, President of the Democratic Labour Party Carlos Lupin, Advisor to the Brazilian President Celso Amorim and President of the Brazil - Vietnam Friendship Association Ignacio Arruda. - A delegation of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA) led by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang had meetings with Vietnamese communities in both the East and West regions of Canada, as part of their working visit to the country from August 24 – 27.

During the meetings, the delegation updated participants on policies and laws related to the legitimate rights and interests of OVs such as the Land Law, the Housing Law, and the Law on Real Estate Business and Law on Citizen Identification; sea and island issues, programmes for Vietnamese expats abroad, and particularly human resources. - Greater support is needed for developing countries in their energy transition to ensure a fair global shift to clean energy, stressed Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), during the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Executive Board's dialogue with member states on actions to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy for development, held in New York on August 27.

In his remarks, Giang highlighted that energy transition plays a crucial role in enabling developing countries to harness innovation and technology, achieve climate goals, and shift towards more sustainable development pathways. Read full story

- The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VDPO), which serves as the Standing Office of the Ministry of National Defence's Steering Committee on participation in the United Nations peacekeeping operations, held a conference in Hanoi on August 27 to review Vietnam's 10-year training work in UN peacekeeping activities.

VDPO Col. Nguyen Nhu Canh said over the past decade, the VDPO has effectively coordinated with various agencies and units to deliver top-tier training that aligns with both UN guidelines and the Vietnam People's Army standards. Between 2014 and 2023, 21 courses equipped nearly 1,500 military personnel with the skills needed to excel in complex peacekeeping environments. Read full story

- Young military officers of Vietnam and Cambodia engaged in a dialogue to discuss joint work in safeguarding national territory sovereignty and border security on August 27 in the southwestern province of Tay Ninh, which borders three provinces of Cambodia.

Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hai, Deputy Political Commissar of the Vietnam Border Guard High Command and Lieutenant General Tien Sophonrnvong, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of the Cambodian border protection department, co-chaired the dialogue. Read full story

- All five members of the Vietnamese team brought home medals from the 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.

All the students are from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in Hanoi, who bagged two silver and three bronze medals at the competition, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 17-27./. Read full story

Cao Bang, China’s Baise city eye to boost all-around cooperation

Ho Chi Minh City, Vientiane strengthen cooperation for 2026–2030

Under the MoU, the two sides will strengthen cooperation in politics – diplomacy, security – defence, legal and judicial affairs, economic affairs, education, culture and society, cooperation among mass organisations and socio-political organisations, and development support.

Vietnam warns citizens against suspicious online job offers abroad

Hanoi to host ASEAN Future Forum 2026 in mid-June

Vietnam’s proposals placed the highest priority on ensuring a peaceful and stable environment conducive for continued sustainable development and improving the well-being and happiness of the ASEAN people. Vietnam asks parties to respect its sovereignty over Truong Sa

The spokesperson stated that the dispatch of personnel by relevant parties to features belonging to Truong Sa without Vietnam’s permission constitutes a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty under international law. She stressed that such actions run counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) as well as ongoing efforts by countries to negotiate a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
