- The 15th National Assembly (NA) started its fifthextraordinary meeting at the NA building in Hanoi on January 15, in thepresence of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President VoVan Thuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, andmany Party, State, NA officials and former leaders.

- Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s upcoming visitto Romania is expected to mark a milestone in the bilateral cooperativerelations, helping to enhance understanding of each other’s priorities andinterests, Romanian Ambassador to Vietnam Cristina Romila has said.

- Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham ThuHang on January 14 affirmed Vietnam persistently follows the “One China” policywhile replying to the media’s question about the result of the election of theleader of Taiwan held on January 13.

In line with the “One China” policy, Vietnammaintains and develops people-to-people and non-governmental relations withTaiwan in the fields of economy, trade, investment, science - technology,culture, and education, among others, she stated, noting that it does notdevelop any state-level relations with Taiwan. Read full story

- The Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) andthe German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) on January 15jointly held a workshop on Vietnam's economic situation in 2023 and prospectsin 2024.

Launching a report titled “Vietnam's economy in 2023 andprospects for 2024: Reforms to accelerate growth recovery” at the event, CIEMexperts forecast that Vietnam's GDP will grow by 6.13% in the first scenarioand 6.48% in the second scenario with the entire year’s exports increasing by4.02% and 5.19%, respectively. Read full story

- The Vietnamese economy is likely to expand by 6-6.5% in thebase scenario, with even recovery recorded in all sectors of agriculture,industry, construction and services, Dr. Can Van Luc, a member of the NationalFinancial-Monetary Policy Advisory Council, has predicted.

The economist held that the country's economicrecovery seen in late 2023 will motivate the economic recovery and developmentthroughout 2024. Read full story

- Vietnam had attracted 39,140 foreign direct investment(FDI) projects with total registered capital of over 468.91 billion USD by theend of 2023, reported the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry ofPlanning and Investment (MPI).

Ho Chi Minh City topped the list of localities nationwide in FDIattraction with 12,398 projects and registered capital of 57.63 billion USD,accounting for 31.67% of the total number of projects and nearly 13% of thetotal registered capital. It was followed by Hanoi with 7,363 projects andregistered capital of 41.17 billion USD; and southern Binh Duong province with4,217 projects and 40.4 billion USD. Read full story

- Indonesian Industry Minister Agus GumiwangKartasasmita has invited Vietnam to cooperate in the development of severalsectors, including the electric vehicle (EV) industry, green industry, foodsecurity, research and development, and human resources.

“We invite Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry andTrade to maintain a discussion with us to strengthen this cooperation andcollaboration,” Minister Kartasasmita said in a statement as quoted by thecountry’s national news agency Antara. Read full story

Defence, security cooperation is an important pillar of Vietnam–Laos ties: PM

Expressing his pleasure at the positive development of the special relationship between Vietnam and Laos, the PM highlighted defence and security cooperation as an important pillar of the bilateral ties. He praised the two defence ministries and armies for implementing high-level agreements, strengthening mutual trust and helping maintain a peaceful and stable environment conducive to socio-economic development.

Vietnam, Cambodia sign defence cooperation plan for 2027

Giang called on agencies and units of the two defence ministries to implement agreed cooperation programmes, focusing on political and ideological education to strengthen political trust, and cooperation between military services and arms. The two sides should step up coordination in border management and protection to build a Vietnam-Cambodia border of peace, cooperation and development.

Deputy PM visits China’s Tsinghua University, seeking closer educational cooperation

Tsinghua has worked to implement the Vietnamese and Chinese leaders’ orientations for higher education cooperation. Last year, it admitted 27 Vietnamese students and postgraduates, the highest number to date, all of whom received scholarships. The university also hosted the second Vietnam-China Higher Education Cooperation Forum, helping promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries’ educational institutions.
