Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- External relations have been a bright spot in Vietnam’s standout achievements in 2023. During less than 10 months holding the post of the head of the state, President Vo Van Thuong attended two of the world’s leading multilateral forums, and paid official visit to eight countries.

The resounding success of the President’s visits has not only made important contribution to consolidating the country’s diplomatic stature that creates favourable conditions for the national development and protection in the new period but also gradually shaped a sincere heart-to-heart diplomatic style. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on January 5 outlined tasks for all-level authorities, sectors, and localities to fulfill in 2024, which he called a year for making breakthroughs that holds special significance to the successful implementation of the five-year plan 2021 - 2025.

He set the tasks while chairing a national teleconference between the Government and local administrations. The event also saw the presence of State President Vo Van Thuong and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue. Read full story

- The upcoming trip to Vietnam by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone is expected to create new impulse for the special cooperation between the two countries, especially economic collaboration, making it a firm pillar of the bilateral ties.

The Lao PM and his spouse will pay an official visit to Vietnam from January 6-7 at the invitation of Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh. During the visit, Sonexay Siphandone will also co-chair the 46th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-Governmental Committee. Read full story

- Major newspapers in Laos on January 5 ran front-page articles on the official visit to Vietnam by Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone from January 6-7, highlighting that the visit will help strengthen the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

The Pasaxon (The People), the official newspaper of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, ran an article titled “Laos-Vietnam relations develop comprehensively”, affirmed that over the past year, the cooperation between the two countries has continuously developed, growing more comprehensive and achieving results in many aspects. Read full story

- The official visit to Vietnam by Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria Rosen Dimitrov Jeliazkov from January 5-9 at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue affirms that parliamentary cooperation is an important pillar in the relationship between the two countries.

Vietnam has paid due regard to multifaceted cooperation with countries in Central and Eastern Europe, with Bulgaria being its top priority partner. Last September, NA Chairman Hue paid an official visit to the country, and received the hearty welcome from Bulgarian leaders. During the visit, the two top legislators signed a new Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two parliaments. Read full story

- Vietnam’s overseas investment, including both newly-registered and adjusted capital, hit 420.9 million USD in 2023, down 21.2% from 2022, reported the General Statistics Office (GSO) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

Of the amount, over 282.7 million USD was registered for 124 new projects, falling by 33.7% year-on-year, while 138.2 million USD was added to 25 existing ones, up 1.3 fold. Read full story

- The domestic real estate market is believed to have reached the bottom and expected to roar back to life this year thanks to a slew of measures taken by the Government, ministries, agencies and localities.

- The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) of the Republic of Korea (RoK) said on January 5 that it has kicked off a corporate body in Vietnam, paving the way for the operation of a logistics centre in the Southeast Asian country to support small- and medium-sized enterprises.

The launch of K-UPA came as the ministry has been working with the state-run Ulsan Port Authority to open the centre in Vietnam’s southern province of Dong Nai to help Korean firms store goods under room or low temperatures. Read full story

- Ho Chi Minh City’s economy is expected to rebound in the second quarter and is likely to achieve a growth of 8% in 2024, according to a report.

- The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has recognised Vietnamese striker Pham Tuan Hai as one of the top players to keep an eye on during the upcoming AFC Asian Cup finals in Qatar.
