Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- President To Lam received the ambassadors of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye, which are members of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), in Hanoi on July 16.

Highlighting the importance role of the OTS, which is located between and connects Asia and Europe, President Lam affirmed that Vietnam always treasures and wishes to further enhance cooperation with the organisation as well as each of its member states. Read full story

- National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Tran Quang Phuong hosted a reception in Hanoi on July 17 for US Senator Tammy Duckworth who affirmed that the visit demonstrates the importance her delegation attaches to boost relations between the two countries and their parliaments.

The senator told the host that accompanying her this time were representatives in the fields of external affairs and economics and trade, with a hope to discuss opportunities and measures to promote strategic cooperation with Vietnam in various aspects. Read full story

- National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man on July 17 asked Hai Phong to encourage all economic sectors to invest in socio-economic and cultural projects, with the goal of transforming Hai Phong into a livable, green, clean and beautiful city.

Speaking at the 18th meeting of the municipal 16th-tenure People’s Council (2021-2026), Man lauded the northern port city for its notable achievements in the first half, with the gross regional domestic product growing by 10.32%, ranking fifth nationwide and first among the five centrally-run cities. The total state budget revenue exceeded 60.8 trillion VND (2.4 billion USD), up 34.77% annually. Export turnover grew by 28.87% year on year to 17.2 billion USD. Read full story

- Debt issues are the motive behind the crime that killed six foreign nationals, including two carrying US passports and four Vietnamese, at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Bangkok's Pathun Want district, Thai police said at a press briefing on July 17.

The police stated that one of the six deceased committed the crime, while the seventh person who was part of the hotel booking left Thailand for Vietnam on July 10. Read full story

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) is joining hands with the Ministry of Public Security to verify the identities of the four Vietnamese citizens among the six found dead at a Bangkok hotel on late July 16, MoFA Spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang told the press on July 17.

Under MoFA leaders' direction, the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand is working closely with local authorities on the case, keep a close watch on and clarify the cause of the incident, while providing necessary information to serve investigation, she said Read full story

- The 8th Vietnam School on Neutrinos (VSON) 2024 was opened in the central city of Quy Nhon, the central province of Binh Dinh, on July 16 by the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE).

The event sees the participation of 32 scientists and researchers in the field of Neutrinos physics from Japan, China, India, Italy, the UK, and the host country. Read full story

- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has revised its economic growth forecast for developing Asia slightly up thanks to stronger domestic demand and export growth.

In the latest edition of Asian Development Outlook, which was released on July 17, the financial institution projected Vietnam’s economic growth at 6.2%, higher than the projection of 6% the bank made in April. Read full story

- Vietnam highly values Laos’s comprehensive approach to sustainable development through the grouping of the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into six pillars to speed up the process and create a more sustainable development path, stated Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN.

The ambassador made the statement after listening to Laos’s voluntary national review (VNR) on SDG implementation presented by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith in New York on July 16 within the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). - Vietnamese athletes with disabilities have basically completed their preparations for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8 in France, according to Director of the Sports Authority of Vietnam under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Dang Ha Viet.

The delegation comprises 13 members, including seven athletes, three coaches, one doctor and three support personnel. The athletes include runner Pham Nguyen Khanh Minh, swimmers Le Tien Dat and Do Thanh Hai, powerlifters Le Van Cong, Nguyen Binh An, Dang Thi Linh Phuong and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan./. Read full story
