Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief reviewof the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

-  The Vietnam Union of Science and TechnologyAssociations (VUSTA) held a ceremony on March 24 in the presence of PartyGeneral Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to mark 60 years since then President Ho ChiMinh had a meeting with intellectuals (May 18, 1963) and its 40th foundinganniversary (March 26, 1983 - 2023).

VUSTA Chairman Phan Xuan Dung said that at thefirst congress of the Vietnam Association for Science and TechnologyDissemination, the predecessor of VUSTA, on May 18, 1963, then President Ho ChiMinh talked to and assigned tasks to the country’s intellectuals. Twenty yearslater, on March 26, 1983, VUSTA was established with Labour Hero, Professor andAcademian Maj. Gen. Tran Dai Nghia, a prominent scientist of Vietnam, being thefirst chairman. Read full story

- Vietnam pledges to further enhance cooperation withinternational organisations and partners, especially countries within theMekong River Commission (MRC) and Mekong-Lancang cooperation mechanism, toachieve sustainable cross-border water development goals, Deputy Prime MinisterTran Hong Ha has said.

Delivering a keynote speech on March 23 at theUnited Nations conference on mid-term comprehensive review on the Decade forAction “Water for Sustainable Development” for the 2018-2022 period, Ha said60% of Vietnam's water resources come from trans-boundary rivers. Read full story

- Russia’s Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) clearly understandsthe relationship with Asian partners, sees opportunities for new mutuallybeneficial ties, and actively promotes relations with many ASEAN member states,including Vietnam, its head Aisen Nikolaev told foreign reporters during apress conference on March 23.

The reporters arrived in the capital city ofYakutsk to attend the International Conference on ClimateChange and Melting of the Permafrost held from March 22-24during Russia's alternate chairmanship of the Arctic Council for the 2021-2023tenure.Read full story

- Ambassador to the UK Nguyen Hoang Long and the UK HomeOffice’s Secretary of State for Immigration Robert Jenrick have discussed thepossibility of expanding legal immigration opportunities for workers in anumber of industries that Vietnam has strengths and the UK is in great demand.

During their working session in London on March23, the two sides spoke highly of the bilateral cooperation in immigration andcrime prevention, agreeing that this is one of the important pillars in thestrategic partnership between the two countries.Read full story

- The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) is takingmeasures to promote the negotiations of a free trade agreement (FTA) with theSouthern Common Market (Mercosur - including Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, andParaguay), which is expected to be a driving force for Vietnam to tap the LatinAmerican market.

In 2022, the South American regional economic blocposted over 12 billion USD in two-way trade with Vietnam, 9.2% higher than thatof the previous year. The Southeast Asian country shipped goods worth 3.3 billionUSD to Mercosur and spent 8.7 billion USD on purchasing products from theregion, annual rises of 3.4% and 11.6%, respectively. Read full story

- Vietnam earned 8.2 billion USD from exports to China in thefirst two months of 2023, posting a year-on-year increase of 4.2%, the Ministryof Industry and Trade (MoIT) has reported.

China is the main importer of many Vietnameseproducts. Therefore, China's market re-opening from January 8 brings greatexpectations to Vietnamese businesses, especially those exporting vegetables,fruits, seafood, fiber, cement, rubber, steel, textiles, and rice. Read full story

- A hot-air balloon festival was held on Doi Duong beach, thesouth-central province of Binh Thuan, on March 24 morning to celebrate theNational Tourism Year 2023 themed “Binh Thuan – Green Convergence”. 

Thousands of locals and tourists gathered on thebeach to admire the 25 balloons and took photos with them.Read full story

- The 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games torch was carried alongseveral streets around Hoan Kiem Lake in the downtown of Hanoi, the first stopoutside the host Cambodia in its tour of the10 ASEAN countries, on March 24morning.

Cambodian Ambassador to Vietnam Chea Kimtha said the torch relayshows a well-developed Cambodia – Vietnam relationship as well as thefriendship and solidarity that the two countries have built and cultivated. Read full story

Vietnam warns citizens against suspicious online job offers abroad

Job offers that do not require qualifications or skills, lack formal contracts, or are not arranged through licensed labour export enterprises or organisations may conceal risks of exploitation, forced labour or human trafficking, said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang.

Hanoi to host ASEAN Future Forum 2026 in mid-June

Vietnam’s proposals placed the highest priority on ensuring a peaceful and stable environment conducive for continued sustainable development and improving the well-being and happiness of the ASEAN people. They were praised by member states and incorporated into the core contents of the ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on the response to the Middle East crisis.

Vietnam asks parties to respect its sovereignty over Truong Sa

The spokesperson stated that the dispatch of personnel by relevant parties to features belonging to Truong Sa without Vietnam’s permission constitutes a violation of Vietnam’s sovereignty under international law. She stressed that such actions run counter to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) as well as ongoing efforts by countries to negotiate a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

Vietnam, France see new strides in defence ties

Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen.
