Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

- The Politburo convened a meeting in Hanoi on September 18 to deliberate on an investment policy for the North-South high-speed railway project, concluding that it is a highly important and necessary infrastructure work.

The project aims to meet the growing transportation demand, contributing to the optimal and sustainable restructuring of the transport market along the North-South corridor. It aligns with the Party’s policies and orientations for transportation infrastructure investment, as outlined in the national development strategy under the 13th National Party Congress’s Resolution and national planning schemes. - The Prime Minister has issued decisions to enforce disciplinary actions against incumbent and former Deputy Ministers of Finance for violations and shortcomings in performing their duties, which already prompted Party disciplinary actions.

Specifically, former Deputy Finance Minister Huynh Quang Hai received a warning while Deputy Finance Minister Vo Thanh Hung and former Deputy Finance Minister Do Hoang Anh Tuan were reprimanded. The decisions took effect on September 17. Read full story

- The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) will help Vietnam and many other developing countries realise their net-zero emissions targets by 2050, and shift to the use of clean energy, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long said at a working session with Norwegian Ambassador to Vietnam Hilde Solbakken in Hanoi on September 18.

Long said, to effectively carrying out the JETP, the Ministry of Industry and Trade established eight working groups focusing on developing offshore wind power, renewable energy centre, and smart power grid, providing training to improve energy transition capacity, and developing green hydrogen, among others. The groups have contributed initiatives to implementing National Power Development Plan VIII, as well as bolstering the development of renewable energy in Vietnam, he said. Read full story

- Vietnam moved up one place to rank 71st among 193 countries in the 2024 edition of the United Nations (UN) E-Government Survey – Accelerating Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development, which was launched by the UN on September 17.

According to the report, Vietnam, scoring 0.7709 in the E-Government Development Index (EGDI), was in the very high EGDI group. The country was ranked fifth among 11 ASEAN members. Read full story

According to its recent article posted on redlanternanalytica.com, as a key player in various global value chains, especially in manufacturing and export-oriented industries like garment and textile, electronics, and engineering, Vietnam has been a major competitor due to its cost advantages, strategic location, and improved infrastructure. - The Bali International Airshow (BIAS) 2024 opened at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Indonesia, on September 18, drawing the participation of defence officials, ministers and industry leaders from more than 20 countries comprising the US, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines.

- Nearly 6 million children have been affected by the destruction caused by typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia, with access to clean water, education, health care, food and shelter all compromised, said UNICEF on September 18.

Typhoon Yagi brought powerful winds and torrential rainfall to Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar when it swept across the region almost two weeks ago. Read full story

- At least 20 people have died, and 14 others are missing due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon, and two tropical cyclones of Ferdie and Gener, the Philippine authorities said on September 18.
