Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam, his spouse and a high-ranking delegation of Vietnam will attend the United Nations Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79), hold working sessions in the United States and pay a state visit to Cuba from September 21-27.

The visit to Cuba will be made at the invitation of First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez and his spouse, according to a communiqué of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued an urgent directive, rallying authorities to brace against a tropical depression that is rapidly intensifying and barreling toward central Vietnam, posing significant risks of heavy rainfall and severe flooding.

The dispatch, sent to authorities of 10 central provinces and cities from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh and relevant ministries, underscored the imminent threat. As of 10 pm on September 18, the storm was located around 320km east of Da Nang, packing maximum winds of Level 7, with gusts up to Level 9. Read full story


- Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung paid a working visit to Singapore on September 18-19, on the occasion of the 18th Singapore-Vietnam Connectivity Ministerial Meeting.

On September 18, Dung co-chaired the meeting with Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Tan See Leng, during which the two sides agreed to continue implementing cooperation in innovation, enhancing applied research capabilities, and promoting creative startups.

They also discussed orientations to expand collaboration in clean energy, the importance of wind power development projects, the establishment of an ASEAN electricity grid, and solutions and challenges Singapore is facing in the energy transition process towards a hydrogen economy. - Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan on September 18 suggested further strengthening cooperation among Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam (CLMV) to resolve any trade obstacles and barriers, and facilitate trade activities, especially in e-commerce, towards stepping up trade cooperation among the countries.

Addressing the 16th Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam Economic Ministers' Meeting (CLMV-EMM 16) in Vientiane, the official acknowledged the efforts of the four countries in promoting economic, trade, and investment activities over the past year, amidst ongoing regional and global economic difficulties and challenges. - United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the right to development Surya Deva had a dialogue in Geneva on September 18 with countries on his activities over the past year, during which he highly valued the Vietnamese Government's multidimensional poverty reduction approach.

Mentioning his visit to Vietnam on November 9-15, 2023, the official affirmed that he had witnessed impressive progress in its economic development and its implementation of social welfare programmes. Read full story

- Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), has affirmed that Vietnam consistently supports international efforts and the Palestinian people's pursuit of a two-state solution in line with relevant UN resolutions, international law, with the pre-1967 border and with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s emergency special session on September 17-18 “Illegal Israeli actions in Occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory” on the basis of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 19, Giang called on all parties involved to seriously implement the UN Security Council's Resolution 2334 (2016), and halt expansion and construction activities of new settlement areas, demolition of homes, and displacement of Palestinian people in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. - Foreign institutional investors are allowed to buy Vietnamese stocks without having enough money at the time of purchase from November 2 under Circular No.68/2024/TT-BTC recently issued by the Ministry of Finance.

Accordingly, securities firms must evaluate the foreign institutional investors’ payment risks to determine the amount of money required when they place stock purchase orders under the agreement between the two parties. Read full story

- Vietnam continues to be among the countries with the highest overall cybersecurity index score in the fifth Global Cybersecurity Index.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has just announced the fifth Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2024. The ITU report showed that countries around the world were improving cybersecurity efforts./. Read full story
