Hanoi (VNA) – The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has urged the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to comply with all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and resume the Six Party Talks over the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula .

A statement released by the bloc on February 10 indicated that ASEAN is following the situation in the Korean Peninsula closely and shares the common concerns of the international community over recent developments in the region.

ASEAN supports the early resumption of the Six Party Talks to bring about denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means.

The statement was released after the DPRK conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and launched a rocket carrying an observation satellite on February 7.

The Six Party Talks, with the participation of the Republic of Korea , the DPRK, the US , Russia , Japan and China , started in 2003 but stalled in December 2008.

The DPRK withdrew from talks in April 2009.

Established in 1967, ASEAN comprises Brunei , Cambodia , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , the Philippines , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam.-VNA
