A special meeting of senior officials responsible for information (Special SOMRI) of ASEAN took place Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 22-23.

There, Secretary-General of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Ministry Kamaruddin Siaraf said the time was right to look at how SOMRI could improve and redirect their focus to implement the ASEAN roadmap more effectively.

He called on ASEAN countries to place more emphasis on supporting and promoting ASEAN awareness, strengthen and develop regional platforms of press, television, radio, film and broadcasting.

At their meeting, the officials set forth a new strategic direction towards establishing an ASEAN Community by 2015, focusing their discussions on cooperation in the media and information sphere and the enhancement of influential role of SOMRI.

They also looked into the need for setting up specialist groups to study specific issues and examine the possibility of regular platforms or networks for long-term projects.

Also present at the event, the ASEAN Secretariat will report the outcomes to the Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) and to the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) in November.-VNA
