ASEAN, Russian senior officials meet

Senior officials from ASEAN member countries and Russia have met in Myanmar's capital of Nay Pyi Taw for their 8th meeting (SOM) to discuss development of the two sides’ ties.

Participants reviewedthe dialogue relations between ASEAN and Russia, and discussed thefuture orientation for the implementation of the ASEAN-Russia energycooperation work plan, cooperation in fighting terrorism, and work onemergency management.

They also discussed the implementation ofthe comprehensive program of 2005-2015 action plan to promotecooperation between ASEAN and the Russia Federation, a road map of tradeand economic cooperation and interaction in the field of science andtechnology.

The June 23 meeting agreed to hold the next ASEAN-Russia SOM in Russia in 2012.

Earlier on June 22, the Foreign Ministers of Myanmar and Russia conducted theirfifth regular consultations to step up bilateral relations and increasecooperation in regional and international organisations.

Myanmarhosted the 8th ASEAN-Russia Joint Coordination Committee Meeting, the7th ASEAN-Russia Joint Planning and Management Committee Meeting, andthe 2nd ASEAN-Russia Working Group Meeting for the 2nd ASEAN-RussiaSummit in November, 2009 since it became a coordinator of ASEAN-Russiadialogue relations in 2009./.

Myanmar's state media quoted military government leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as saying the earthquake death toll had reached 2,065, with more than 3,900 injured and some 270 missing. Aid agencies forecast these numbers will rise significantly due to information blackouts in remote areas.

WHO seeks urgent funding for Myanmar after devastating earthquake

In its flash appeal for funds, the WHO said the high numbers of casualties and trauma injuries are at high risk of infection due to limited surgical capacity in the country, while the underlying conditions in Myanmar meant the quake is likely to intensify the risk of diseases.
