Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will lead a Vietnamese delegation to the 21 st ASEAN Summit (ASEAN-21) and related summits in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from November 17-20.
The ASEAN Summit is taking place in the context that the grouping is pushing up the building of the ASEAN Community and connectivity, maintaining solidarity and its central role in the region, and broaden relations with its partners.
The region and the world continue to see complicated developments that affect ASEAN’s solidarity, prestige and central role. This requires the association’s unity in issues of regional common concern such as peace, stability and development - including maritime security and safety in the East Sea.
The ASEAN-21 and related summits (ASEAN+3 Summit, the East Asia Summit and ASEAN+1 summit), with partners, namely China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, India and the US, will focus on accelerating the building of the ASEAN community and connectivity to maintain the group’s solidarity and central role in tackling issues of interest and focus - issues that concern regional peace, security, stability and cooperation, and expanding in-depth relations with partners in a more practical and effective manner.
Aside from the summits there will be a meeting between ASEAN leaders and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and a Global Dialogue Forum. To prepare for these events, meetings of senior officials (SOMs) and ministerial meetings will be held.
At the ASEAN summit, regional leaders will sign the Phnom Penh Declaration, adopt the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration and several important documents regulating ASEAN cooperation. They include a declaration in consideration of the establishment of the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Centre (ARMAC) and the Plan of Action to Implement the Bali Concord III.
In the spirit of “activeness, proactiveness and responsibility”, the Vietnamese delegation will continue promoting results achieved together with ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Chair, Cambodia, contributing to the success of the summits.
This will help consolidate ASEAN’s solidarity and central role, contributing to building a united and strong ASEAN, as well as fostering peace, security, stability, cooperation and development in the region – aiding the role and position of Vietnam, and improving the country’s bilateral relations with partners.-VNA
