Hanoi (VNA) – The nine best entries of the fifth Vietnam Press Caricature Contest were awarded at a ceremony in Hanoi on January 11.

The contest, organised by the The thao va Van hoa (Sports and Culture) newspaper of the Vietnam News Agency, was themed “Cultural Behaviours, Civilised Society”.

The first prize went to the painting “Chuc cho” (Waiting) by Le Dieu Bang with pen name Meo.

Two second prizes, two third prizes and four consolation prizes were also granted at the ceremony.

Editor-in-Chief of the The Thao va Van hoa newspaper Le Xuan Thanh, head of the organising board, said the contest resumed in 2018 after a several-year hiatus. It attracted about 400 entries that criticize wrong behaviours and support civilised ones. Notably, more than 30 percent of them focus on conduct on social networks.

Congratulating the winners, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Ho Quang Loi said the contest’s success shows that caricature is still a “sharp weapon” of painter journalists and press agencies. Caricatures attract public attention to important issues as they are able to directly affect the awareness of people from all social strata, regardless of their educational level, age and language.

On this occasion, a 60-page book was published to introduce the outstanding entries of the contest. The 60 best caricatures will also be exhibited on the pedestrian street near Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi on January 12 and 13. –VNA
